The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards. Leading the list are the critically acclaimed period comedy The Favourite and Netflix's coming-of-age drama Roma, which scored 10 nods apiece. Roma marks the streaming service's first-ever Best Picture nomination and is a show of power for streaming: It has an official box office tally of zero dollars. Blockbuster hit Black Panther nabbed seven nominations, including Best Picture, making it the first comic book adaptation to be nominated in the category and one of the top-grossing movies ever to earn a nod in it. First, the Academy received backlash after it announced a new "popular film" category, which it backtracked after the concept was criticized for sidelining Black Panther.
