Ottawa seeks indefinite delay in $27-million torture lawsuit by Canadian citizen detained in Sudan


“At best, the document demonstrates that for CSIS human rights of a Canadian citizen are a cynical joke,” said lawyer Paul Champ. The 10-week trial in the $27-million lawsuit was supposed to start Monday in an austere Federal Court room in the same building as the Supreme Court of Canada. But Canadian officials deny any knowledge of or involvement in abuse. “In our case conference with the judge, Department of Justice officials suggested that this was coming from the very top,” he said. Champ says Abdelrazik’s civil case should go to trial or it should be settled out of court.
