Tourism remains Africa’s major foreign exchange earner and can only be compared to agriculture. However, the enormous potential of the sector remains largely untapped.Dwindling revenues from agriculture occasioned by decreasing arable land, population pressure and unpredictable rainfall leave tourism as the continent’s main economic mover. Statistics about Africa’s share of global tourism revenues are shocking, despite all the potential. Professionals are sidelined in key decisions affecting tourism sector due to selfish interests. The only hope we have is for policymakers to promote professionalism in the management of the tourism sector to boost the fortunes of the struggling industry.
