Over 8,000 Flights Delayed Or Canceled As Winter Weather Strikes U.S.—These Airports Are Hardest-Hit

ToplineMore than 8,000 U.S. flights were either canceled or delayed Tuesday as the country continues to deal with severe weather conditions from the Midwest and South to the East Coast. The top five airports for canceled destination flights are Reagan National (161), Houston Bush (131), LaGuardia (130), O’Hare (112) and Nashville (82). New York City’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, along with Chicago O’Hare and airports in Houston, Atlanta and Dallas, have also experienced hundreds of delayed flights each because of the extreme weather. Surprising FactSouthwest, the airline most heavily affected by the weather, has delayed over 1,000 flights (or 27% of its schedule) and canceled another 440 (12%). In Iowa, extremely cold temperatures left the National Weather Service warning of “life threatening wind chills” all the while Iowans were trying to caucus in the first primary of the year.
