Nationals ownership is saying it can't afford to keep two of the team's best players. “We really can only afford to have one of those two guys,” Lerner told NBC Sports Washington. The Nationals payroll right now sits just shy of $116 million – almost $85 million less than what their payroll was last season. What Lerner is doing with this statement is flat out lying to a fan base that has been loyal and wants to keep winning. But Lerner is treating them like they are, and pocketing the profits he thinks they won’t notice.
