PUWU-TUC opposes government's plan to introduce private sector in ECG

Business News of Wednesday, 24 December 2025Source: www.ghanaweb.comThe Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has opposed what it describes as a hasty government move to introduce Private Sector Participation (PSP) in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The Union expressed surprise at the announcement, noting that "it comes at a time when an agreed turnaround programme for ECG is already underway." PUWU stressed that the programme followed assurances from the Minister of Energy of non-interference in the operations of the power distributor. PUWU noted that ECG workers have demonstrated “exceptional commitment, discipline and dedication,” leading to measurable improvements in the company’s performance. The Union called on government to allow the turnaround programme to continue and yield its intended results, rather than pursuing what it considers an unnecessary and premature shift toward private sector involvement.
