Palmerston North chain Downtown Cinemas bought by Event CinemasPalmerston North's Downtown Cinemas chain has been sold. It has been picked up by Event Cinemas, which is owned by Australian company Event Hospitality and Entertainment. Downtown Cinemas, in the Downtown on Broadway shopping centre, was New Zealand's first multi-screen cinema when it opened in Palmerston North with six screens in 1990. Downtown Cinemas chairman Bill Wallace said the company was proud of the business it had built up in the past 25 years. Downtown started in the city with New Zealand's first multi-screen cinema complex in 1990, before later expanding into Havelock North and Paraparaumu.
