Patriotism: More Unum, Less Pluribus Please

People carry a giant American flag as they march in the Veterans Day Parade in New York City on Nov. 11, 2016. Photo: Volkan Furuncu/Anadolu Agency/Getty ImagesI am disappointed that Adam Kirsch’s otherwise fine essay “American Patriotism Is Worth Fighting For” (Review, Oct. 19) fails to mention a new campaign to promote healthy patriotism, the Patriotic Movement, or to cite “Reclaiming Patriotism,” the new book by the movement’s leader, Amitai Etzioni. The laudable goals of this movement are to build up the national community and its institutions, thereby reducing polarization and facilitating cooperative action on major problems. It seems to me that two factors contribute to waning patriotism: a general lack of education at all levels in American civics, history and culture, and that there are fewer of us who have served either in the military or performed public service.
