The New England Patriots have informed the 29-year-old tight end of his release, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday. But Allen, who was set to earn a base salary of $6.4 million in 2019, is now free to explore what the open market has to offer. The transaction frees $7.3 million in cap space for the Patriots heading into the new league year on March 13. Allen’s upcoming cap number ranked ninth-highest among NFL tight ends, per OverTheCap.com, and seventh-highest on the Patriots’ books. The move lowered his 2018 cap charge from $5 million to under $3.9 million, as well as his 2019 salary from $6.9 million to $6.4 million.
