Negotiations got off on a bad foot when the 20 per cent figure appeared in a newspaper report before it had been presented to the players. While the players understand the union's financial predicament, there is a determination to avoid uniform cuts across the board to protect players on low salaries. The deferral scheme saw Ireland's highest earners take a 50 per cent pay cut, while it protected those who earn below €25,000. The sport is set to resume in August but there is still no clarity on the international schedule.
