Peru bus crash: 29 killed after 'speeding' driver plunges vehicle into 656ft valley

The tragedy happened near the town of Matucana, along Peru's Central Highway, a corridor that connects the capital Lima to much of the central Andes. At least 29 passengers have died and 24 are said to have been injured after the smash in the early hours of Tuesday, authorities said. Mr Bacilio, who survived the crash, told the publication that after an initial collision, the bus carried on its journey for several meters before falling. According to the Superintendence of Land Transportation of People, Cargo and Merchandise, the last transmission of the GPS system on the bus reported it to be moving at 'excessive speed', the publication reports. The two incidents are unrelated, although bus plunges are not uncommon in Peru, especially in the Andes.
