Unesco had warned that the planned tunnel could result in the Stonehenge world heritage site moving to its “in-danger” listPlans for a new road tunnel near Stonehenge were in tatters today after the High Court ruled that government approval for the scheme was unlawful. A judge decided in favour of a legal challenge brought by heritage campaigners who argued that the two-mile tunnel breached the government’s own planning advice. Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site (SSWHS) argued that allowing the project to proceed would devastate the area around the 5,000-year-old monument. The government will now be forced to either draw up new plans, shelve the scheme altogether or appeal.
