The incident occurred in the gambling area of the Wakatu Bar in Nelson on the afternoon of November 27. Pihema had been drinking alcohol at the bar and was mildly intoxicated, when she tried to take over a reserved gambling machine left vacant by another female patron. Pihema sat down at the unattended machine and started using it, before being confronted by the woman.
