Mexico said that about 500 people had tried “violently” to reach the United States RODRIGO ABD/APThe US border patrol fired tear gas across America’s southern border and shut down its busiest port with Mexico yesterday after a group of migrants attempted to break through barricades at the crossing. Traffic across the San Ysidro port of entry between San Diego in California and Tijuana in Mexico was halted after the attempt by hundreds of migrants to force their way into the US. Many of the migrants had gathered earlier in the day to protest against being forced to stay in Tijuana instead of being allowed to cross and seek asylum in the US. Children screamed and coughed as the tear gas was carried by the wind towards people who were hundreds of feet away, not attempting to enter the US.
