Polish Workers Are Driving Labor Migration To Iceland

GettyNet migration to Iceland in 2018 dipped slightly from the year before but remains well above its pre-2008 crash highs. According to Statistics Iceland, which released the 2018 migration figures late last week, 14,275 people came to the country, while 7,719 left, leaving net migration at 6,556 for the year. Hjördis Rut Sigurjonsdottir, a social researcher at the Nordregio research center based in Sweden, said that labor migration was the main driver of immigration to Iceland. Again, Sigurjonsdottir of Nordregio said the growth in the Polish population of Iceland has not caused too much friction in Iceland's still-opening society. Despite a slight slowdown in growth, temporary and longer-term labor migration is anticipated to help drive Iceland's economy for the near future.
