Their independence is what lands them in the first episode of an intriguing new PBS series about modern presidential campaigns, "The Contenders: 16 for '16." The approach often makes for political odd couples, with host and producer Carlos Watson teasing out the shared elements of their campaigns. Watson promises "The Contenders" will offer useful perspective on what he calls this year's interesting if "confusing" race.
