Former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, who faced backlash during the 2018 primaries that she ultimately lost after she mistakenly outed sexual assault survivors in a campaign ad, is on the shortlist for a position in President-elect Joe Biden's Cabinet. The ad criticized then-GOP opponent Rep. Kevin Cramer for comments he made before Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court. She was later accused of using a World War II veteran’s photo without his permission. As a senator, Heitkamp served on the Senate Agriculture Committee and was an advocate for rural issues.
