Was the Premier League’s 2017 summer transfer the craziest window in history? It’s a question that many have asked, and perhaps rightly so, given the amount of fee records being smashed. Even while Paris Saint-Germain’s £198 million purchase of Neymar may have grabbed the headlines, the Premier League still spent around as much as the French, Spanish and German leagues combined in 2016-17. On the final day alone, top flight English teams spent some £210 million. This season, spending was nearly double the £782 million received.
