President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had an online meeting today (7). According to the President’s Twitter handle, Dr. Tedros had mentioned that approval would be granted for the emergency use of the Sinopharm vaccine in another two to three days. The President stated that once this approval comes through, Sri Lanka will be able to start vaccinating citizens with the available stock of 600,000 Sinopahrm vaccines. During the meeting, Dr Tedros had commended Sri Lanka’s control of the pandemic throughout the first wave and was hopeful that the current surge in affected persons would soon be brought under control. President Gotabaya had also expressed his appreciation of the support provided to Sri Lanka by the WHO.
