Pro-EU protests on Border as Brexit supporters cheer escape from federal ‘prison’

Protesters gathered on the Border on Friday night ahead of the UK’s departure from the EU to show their opposition to Brexit. A spokesman for the group said Northern Ireland was being “dragged out of the European Union against its will” and that “many threats and serious challenges” remained in regard to citizens’ rights post-Brexit. He called on British prime minister Boris Johnson to “flex his muscles” in future negotiations with the EU. He said Brexit was “an act of constitutional violence inflicted on the people of Northern Ireland and Scotland by an English electorate. “A pragmatic approach is needed by all parties to ensure the NI protocol is workable from next January,” said Aodhán Connolly, director of the Northern Ireland Retail Consortium.
