Proposition 14 to fund state stem cell research approved by California voters

California’s stem cell agency will receive an infusion of $5.5 billion in new research funding after voters approved Proposition 14. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, known as CIRM, will receive the additional funds for stem cell studies and trials. Under the 2004 measure, Proposition 71, California created a state constitutional right to conduct stem cell research. Religious objections to this year’s bond measure were largely absent, with little organized opposition or cash thrown into fighting Proposition 14. The state is still paying off the $3-billion stem cell bond from 2004, which will cost an additional $3 billion in interest.
