It seems the Government has run out of road in its efforts to resist Opposition attempts to force Minister for Justice Helen McEntee into a full Dáil statement on the appointment of Séamus Woulfe to the Supreme Court. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has told the Dáil that McEntee will make a statement and answer questions on the issue, perhaps as soon as Thursday. This time, the Government said the risk of violating the separation of powers – as it relates to a judicial appointment – was too great and there was the risk of contaminating an impeachment process. First, the opposition withdrew from the Dáil business committee, the body which sets the agenda for the house. McEntee answered one question at the committee, but no further questions were asked.
