The poignant event was held two days after what would have been the Duke of Edinburgh’s 100th birthday. Among their horses on the parade was Firefly, a mare bred from one of the Queen’s own Royal Mews horses, Firework. Last year was the first time the sovereign’s birthday parade had been held at Windsor since 1895 during the reign of Queen Victoria. Trooping the Colour traditionally takes place at Horse Guards Parade in London, where more than 1,400 soldiers and 200 horses take part. Next week, the Queen is expected to attend Royal Ascot on Tuesday and Saturday, if her horses run on those days.
