Chris Grayling, the transport secretary, was urged to change the way fares were calculated after commuters were told that they would rise by 3.6 per cent from January because of higher than expected inflation. The average commuter will pay £2,888 for a season ticket next year, £694 more than in 2010, analysis showed. Commuters going into London will be hardest hit, with the average season ticket costing £4,065, up £146 on this year.
