A growing number of online platforms offer informal, temporary jobs and there are concerns that workers are losing not only job security but also basic employment rights. They are required to be flexible and to put up with low pay, high pressure and uncertainty. Last month, for example, Deliveroo, which delivers takeaway food, faced protests from its drivers over proposals that they be paid per delivery rather than per hour. Meanwhile, drivers from UberEats, a rival service, claimed that they were taking home less than the national living wage.
