Musician Emmanuel Jal, once a child soldier in his native Sudan, now lives in Toronto. He and his sister Nyaruch, who continues to live in a refugee camp in Kenya, managed to collaborate for the album Naath. ( Rick Madonik / Toronto Star ) Emmanuel Jal says his sister Nyaruach is a “tough activist,” and that part of the catalyst behind the album Naath was to help her establish her own identity as an artist. “That was a shock,” says dreadlocked rapper Jal, 39, during an interview in the living room of his west-end Toronto home. She reunited with Jal in 2004 and appears on Gua but, as recounted by Jal earlier, life in camp is a struggle.
