As of Friday, 279,966 Americans have died from coronavirus and 14.4 million cases have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic. While hospitalizations hit record highs in the US, the average percentage of infected people who are hospitalized with COVID is dropping. And in South Dakota, one network of hospitals sent 150 people home with oxygen tanks to keep beds open for sicker patients. States such as New York introduced field hospitals, patients were transferred to other states and medical workers from other parts of the country were brought in to help. States meanwhile are preparing for the first distribution to fall short, as hospitals across the country grapple with record numbers of COVID-19 patients and staffing shortages.
