A record-breaking 5.8 magnitude earthquake has rocked the Australian state of Victoria, damaging buildings and sending panicked Melbourne residents running into the streets. The earthquake, felt as far away as Sydney and Tasmania, shook buildings and knocked down walls as residents said it sounded like a 'jet engine'. Tremors were felt as far away as Tasmania, South Australia and some parts of Sydney. 1988 Tennant Creek earthquake The magnitude 6.6 earthquake in a sparsely-populated region of the Northern Territory is Australia's most powerful earthquake on record. 2011 Christchurch earthquake A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, on New Zealand's south island, on February 22, 2011 - claiming the lives of 185 people and leaving an estimated 2,000 with injuries.
