'Relaxation of BM requirement for medical graduates won't undermine national language'

BALIK PULAU: The Health Ministry has given its assurance that the loosening of the Bahasa Melayu (BM) requirement for qualified medical graduates will not undermine the national language. "At that time, there were not many local medical officers and we had to depend on foreign medical officers, many of whom were not well versed in the language. If we did not waive the BM requirement, they could not serve in the country. "Now, we no longer have that many foreign medical officers, expect in Sabah and Sarawak. Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had said recently that the Public Service Department had relaxed the BM requirement for qualified medical graduates to be appointed as Grade UD41 contract house/medical officers.
