Release jailed advocate: IAPL

more-inThe Indian Association of People’s Lawyers has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of jailed Madurai-based advocate A. Murugan, who was arrested by the ‘Q’ Branch police in Tamil Nadu in January this year for his alleged links with Maoists. Releasing a report here on Friday based on their preliminary enquiries, IAPL alleged that Mr. Murugan was framed in a fabricated case for discharging his duty as an advocate. D. Sureshkumar, Joint Secretary of IAPL, alleged that, in Murugan’s case, privileged communication between him as an advocate and his clients was used to foist the case against him. D. Gurunathan, Secretary of Tamil Nadu unit of IAPL, blamed the State government for foisting a second case against Mr. Murugan with the mala fide intention of denying him bail. “It is ironic that the BCI, which is now opposing certain draconian amendments to the Advocates Act, was the one that suspended so many advocates in Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Ferreira said.
