Remain rebels force climbdown over rights to sue government


Rebels had warned that the Withdrawal bill would stop UK citizens from being able to hold the government to account over breaches of laws such as air pollution limits AFP/GETTY IMAGESConservative rebels forced ministers into a climbdown last night over their plans to remove the right of citizens to sue the government for damages after Brexit. Ministers had insisted that they would scrap so called Francovich rules that allow individuals and companies to take legal action against the government for breaching retained EU laws after Britain leaves the bloc. However, facing a backbench rebellion led by Dominic Grieve, the former attorney-general, ministers told the Commons last night that they would think again about their plans in an attempt to find a compromise. The rebels had warned that without a change to the Withdrawal bill, which is currently going through the Commons, UK citizens would not be able to hold the government to account for breaches…
