Report on Black mental health a good first step, advocates say


A first-of-its-kind report that examined the mental health of Ottawa's Black community is a positive first step, but more action is needed to address health inequities caused by systemic racism and discrimination, community advocates say. Longer-wait times, stigma, and discrimination in the health care system keep people from accessing mental health services. We speak with Ottawa Public Health's Hodan Aden about the report on mental health in Ottawa's Black community. Both Ndéma-Moussa and Browne said measures to improve mental health in the Black community need to go beyond research. Forty per cent also said that taking treatment for a mental health problem is a sign of personal failure.
