Researchers facing ‘shocking’ levels of stress, survey reveals

Nearly two thirds of those who took part had witnessed bullying or harassmentOverwhelming work pressure, discrimination, and widespread bullying and harassment are contributing to “shocking” levels of stress and mental health problems among scientists, according to a major survey into research culture. The survey, commissioned by the Wellcome Trust, the biomedical research funder, shines a spotlight on a research environment that has been in trouble for some time. It is a problem the Wellcome Trust faced itself in 2018, when it investigated leaders of its Sanger Institute in Cambridge after staff alleged bullying, mistreatment and discrimination. “Some of these results are frankly shocking,” said Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust. Sessions on “health culture” had a tendency to descend into group counselling, with the message being that “we are all in this together”, he said.
