more-inAn attempt to open a liquor shop at Ottapidaaram with police protection despite the protest by the public triggered heated argument between the residents and the police on Wednesday. After the liquor shop at Ottapidaaram was closed following the Supreme Court’s order, the new shop was opened on the Ottapidaaram – Panchalankurichi Road. Since Indra Nagar, Ceylon Colony and AKS Nagar are situated very nearby, the residents are opposing it and demanding its permanent closure. When they submitted a petition to then Collector M. Ravikumar on May 17 last, he assured them that the liquor shop would be shifted within 45 days. When the liquor shop workers tried to open the shop at 12 noon on Tuesday, the protestors resisted it and the agitation continued despite the talks held by Ottapidaram tahsildar Kaliraja.
