★★★★☆Itching to begin their first British gig for 15 years, Guided by Voices arrived on stage early as a queue still snaked round the block outside. For the cult Ohio band, every second counts. By the time the final fan had squeezed into the east London club, the quintet had torn through seven songs. Two sweat-soaked hours later, they hit the 50 mark. Like the late Mark E Smith, Pollard is a prolific workaholic who has steered his band through umpteen incarnations, restlessly releasing about 100 albums, including two this year.
