Ms. Peters gets all that, and returns it. But if her performance is more like Ms. Murphy’s than like Ms. Midler’s, it has an even darker underlay. And Mr. Stemp, as a 17-year-old clerk looking for adventure, doesn’t seem so much excitable as convulsive. Ms. Peters goes along with all this, to a point. Personally, I’m a sucker for that: I think it gives this “Dolly” a fascinating new valence.
