THE government is planning to revive the National Service Training Programme or PLKN (“Govt plans to revive National Service programme”, The Star, Nov 24; online at bit.ly/star_national). The objectives and design of the training programme are well-crafted and relevant to our multiracial and multireligious society. While Patriot agrees that PLKN is a good programme, its revival at this time when the country is facing economic and financial woes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is not necessary. Activities such as scouting (Brownies, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides), outdoor motivational camps, military and police school cadets, and school choirs are good examples. The Red Crescent and St John’s Ambulance are good examples, too.
