Bluefin tuna were were once abundant in Irish waters, but overfishing and climate change have led to the population crashing. The giant Atlantic bluefin tuna normally visits Irish shores in the summer months, but marine heatwaves make conditions uncomfortable. “Understanding how climate change may alter the conditions the tuna encounter along their journey is really important,” she said. Scientists from Stanford University and the University of California assisted in the global exercise, as did the Irish Marine Institute and local anglers. “Atlantic bluefin are a hugely important species for lots of reasons, and it’s looking like they might move further north in the near future.
