BBC director-general Lord Hall announced his departure in an email to staff this morning ReutersLord Hall of Birkenhead is stepping down as the BBC director-general after seven years, saying that someone new should lead negotiations with the government on the corporation’s future. He announced his departure from the £450,000-a-year-role in an email to staff this morning and will leave this summer to take up the post of chairman of the National Gallery. “If I followed my heart I would genuinely never want to leave. However, I believe that an important part of leadership is putting the interests of the organisation first,” he wrote. Lord Hall, 68, said that one person should lead the corporation through the BBC’s mid-term review in 2022 and negotiations for a new royal charter in 2027.
