The pub is Donnelly’s, a traditional enough name, but there are no fiddle players in sight or old men telling stories about the little people. Victor Forde, the novel’s narrator, is a recent regular, having moved into the neighbourhood after the disintegration of his marriage to a successful caterer and TV celebrity. After that brief peak, his career went nowhere, eventually taking his marriage with it. One night at the pub, Victor is spotted by Eddie Fitzpatrick, a man who claims to be a classmate from high school. Eddie is both obsequious and belligerent, needling Victor when he obviously can’t remember his name.
