Two European countries are pushing hard for changes in EU legislation on home brewery regulations ahead of this weeks’ elections across all 28 countries. Romania and Hungary want to be able to allow their citizens — which include many orchard farmers — to be able to freely make brandy at home by distilling fruit. In Romania, the brandy is called “tuica” and is commonly made from plums. But Romania is using its position as head of the revolving EU presidency beginning in June to kickstart renegotiations. However, it is now much easier to distill spirits as a new micro-brewery, as is the case across other European countries.
