Referees have been pushed beyond their limits in what they are being asked to do with the additional judgments now required around the enhanced cynical rules. That’s the view of former Roscommon footballer Paul Earley who is a long-time advocate of introducing a second referee to Gaelic football because of the scale of decisions they are being increasingly asked to make. Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham was left perplexed on Sunday as his side conceded three penalties to Dublin, two for the enhanced cynical rule and one for a foot block that Earley feels should not have been awarded. “They (new cynical rules) place a huge additional burden on referees, making it almost impossible to make those judgment calls with all the variables that are associated with a particular incident,” said Earley.
