Gordon Flett, a diehard runner, is joining road races almost every weekend this summer in his hometown of Winnipeg, Canada. In return, they get shiny medals in the mail that they celebrate with other runners in online forums. For a recent “Family Ice Cream Run” 10K, Mr. Flett, who is 60 and retired, ran back and forth at a near-empty industrial park. Before March, virtual running was a footnote to lively competitive road racing. Now RunSignup, a race platform, listed 7,704 virtual running events between March 1 through July, compared with 846 in the same time last year.
