Sir, Edward Lucas makes important points about the need for deterrence but I would go further: a full-scale armed attack by Russia on a Nato country would, without question, mean war between Nato and Russia (“Ukraine plight chills spirits in the Baltics”, Jan 15). Whatever the outcome of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Russia will remain determined to subjugate Ukraine and, if given half a chance, will move on to other targets: Georgia, Moldova, the Baltic states and eastern Poland. The only way peace can be maintained is through effective deterrence under the Nato alliance, including Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, and perhaps one day Belarus.
