Sabres captain Eichel disagrees with NHL's 2-game suspension

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Jack Eichel will abide by the NHL’s decision to suspend him two games for an illegal check to Colorado forward Carl Soderberg’s head. “If you look at the hit and look at the rule book, I didn’t think it matched up,” Eichel said following practice Monday. He said Soderberg was reaching for the puck and that his head hit Eichel’s back. The NHL ruled Eichel was to blame because Soderberg didn’t change the direction he was heading, while Eichel cut sharply in front of Soderberg to initiate contact. Sabres coach Phil Housley backed Eichel, who leads the team with a career-best 72 points (25 goals, 47 assists) in 65 games.
