Five years into a project to name all the public laneways in Toronto, there were, as of the end of December, 438 named public laneways and 2,590 unnamed ones, according to a spokesperson for the city of Toronto. Sandra Shamas Lane got the stamp of approval from Toronto and East York Community Council last week. Toronto journalist Arianne Robinson, of Signal Toronto, reported in early 2018 that the process appears to be sliding toward a preponderance of male names. A list of named lanes provided by the city shows that as of January 2018, roughly 80 lanes had been named after men compared to 25 after women, while 269 were neutral. “I just don’t understand how that could happen in a city like Toronto in 2019,” he said.
