“I made gold medals out of construction paper and made a little Canadian flag,” Nurse recalls. Nurse fashioned gold medals out of her materials and her grandfather hung one around her neck. A seven-year-old Sarah Nurse was at her grandparents’ house watching the Canadian women’s hockey team play for Olympic gold in 2002 when inspiration struck. Cousin Kia is a point guard for Connecticut and also an Olympian having played for the Canadian team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. He was never able to play hockey.
