Zenkerella insignis, the critter caught on Bioko, is one of the world's most ancient and mysterious mammals. But, in a study published Tuesday in the journal PeerJ, Fernandez, Seiffert and their colleagues describe the capture of three freshly killed Z. insignis specimens. An illustration of a Zenkerella skeleton and map of Bioko Island are superimposed against an image of the rain forest where the Zenkerella specimens were found. The living Zenkerella looks almost like the reconstructions of its long-dead ancestors envisioned by paleontologists. We don't know for certain that Zenkerella is threatened, but we don't know that it isn't, either.
