Lava crystals that erupted from volcanoes more than half a century ago can reveal secrets about when they may next erupt, a new study claims. US scientists analysed crystals formed inside a type of porous rock that burst from the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii in 1959. The crystals had an odd shape that, along with computer modelling simulations, can predict future and potentially fatal eruptions, the experts say. Island of Hawaii is the US state's biggest islandBut volcanic crystals can help test computer models of magma flow, which could reveal insights about past eruptions and possibly help predict future ones. Researchers that tracked the event said there was no indication when the destructive lava flow would come to a halt.
