They were the 54th group of Syrians to leave the camp over the past few years and the first in 2024, according to the camp’s director, Jihan Hanan. “We have no desire to keep the residents of northeast Syria at al-Hol,” Hanan said. Tens of thousands of people linked to the group were taken to al-Hol camp close to the Iraqi border. Hanan said that over the past five years about 30,000 people, mostly Iraqis and Syrians, have left the camp.
